Markets Update:
The Nasdaq Composite surged to a fresh all-time high on Monday as investors looked past rising U.S. Treasury yields and digested new economic data.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq gained 1.05% to an intraday high of 27,544.07 before closing at a record 27,477.31. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 90.94 points, or 0.18%, to 51,267.90, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.66% to 7,773.95.
Artificial intelligence-related stocks led the Nasdaq higher. SpaceX jumped more than 7%, while Meta Platforms and Microsoft gained nearly 2% and more than 1%, respectively. Nvidia and Tesla each climbed about 2%.
Infrastructure Capital Advisors CEO Jay Hatfield described technology stocks as an “inverse bond trade,” saying strong earnings growth and robust demand for computing have made the sector relatively resilient to higher interest rates.
Meanwhile, Treasury yields continued to rise. The 10-year Treasury yield climbed more than three basis points to 5.311%, while the 30-year yield rose to 5.664%. Both have recently reached multiyear highs as investors worry that persistent inflation could keep Federal Reserve interest rates elevated.
Investors also assessed September’s ISM services PMI, which came in at 54.9, broadly matching expectations but slowing slightly from August.
Markets now await minutes from the Federal Reserve’s September meeting for further clues on monetary policy. Oil prices also declined, with Brent crude settling at $100.32 a barrel.
